Vive le XP!

Our business clients can sleep well tonight: Dell has announced that they will be offering XP Professional on systems past June 30. They’re using a “feature” in the Windows Vista license which allows for the licensee to downgrade their OS to XP. For some models, this is a no-cost option; for their lower-end systems (Vostro, etc) there will be a nominal charge.

Unfortunately, this means less accurate penetration numbers for Vista; every XP machine shipped is going to count as a Vista license.

We’re hoping to leapfrog Vista entirely; Windows Server 2008 takes a modular approach to the OS – to the point that you don’t even need to install a graphical interface. We hope that Windows 7 (the successor to Vista) follows suit and allows us to only install/activate necessary services.
