Slow computer? Look no further than your printer driver.

As much as I like the feature set in HP all-in-ones, their product is hopelessly cripped by amazingly large, bloated software installs. The “full install” of a typical HP all-in-one software package weighs in at about 750 megs - 30 times larger than it should be, in my opinion.

This translates to long installs and slower computers. My advice: check out competing products from vendors like Brother. Or visit HP’s website and download the “corporate” version of their drivers. They’re usually much smaller and only contain the essentials.

A word processor built for two

There’s no disputing the dominance of Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Office in general, when it comes to office productivty applications. Sure, Word Perfect had a decent run in the late 80s, but with the advent of Windows, Microsoft came out with a great set of tools which have been largely uncontested for fifteen years.

The internet is delivering some interesting challengers, which while not feature-rich and secure enough to be replacements for Microsoft’s products, do offer some unique benefits.
